Ink Drying — Sometimes Faster is Better

Hr Printer's Tools

In today's business environment, printers are under pressure to deliver printed products with much shorter lead times. Still, the ink has to be dry before you can ship the order. At some point, your customers may ask your advice on the issue, so it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of the drying process.

Paste inks used in sheetfed printing dry through a process of oxidation and polymerization. Multiple factors influence the rate at which these inks dry: ink ingredients, substrate, temperature and humidity, and fountain solution chemistry.

There are specialty pressroom chemicals formulated to speed the drying process by increasing the rate of oxygen uptake. Flint Group's Varn Ink Drying Stimulator is a great solution when your customers are working to meet extremely tight deadlines.
